This massive 12 piece dining room suite is a stunningly impressive example of turn of the century R. J. Horner style craftsmanship. Superbly crafted and intricately carved, the dense configuration of elements manifests this periods growing preoccupation with all things richly ornate. The workmanship is first class throughout, with a proliference of three dimensional handcarvings evident on every piece. As in the tradition of R. J. Horner, this 12 piece suite was expertly and beautifully handcrafted to grace the dining rooms of the homes of wealthy clients of the early 1900's. A combination of woods were used, with a richly hued walnut on all the surfaces of the pieces, and another wood of European origin for all the carved detailing. The "man in the mountain" configurations are used throughout, combining with other richly carved detailing. The 12 piece suite consists of a sideboard, server, china cabinet, table, and 8 chairs. The sideboard is spectacular in the magnificently carved detailing and the overall style and size. It measures 92" in length and the overall height, with the top gallery, is 67". The carved gallery gracing the back is 23" high. It is 35" deep, with cupboards on either end, and 2 drawers atop a smaller cupboard in between. There is so much detail in the carving throughout this massive sideboard and we have tried to capture as much of it as we could in our photos. All of the carvings are intact and display a richly hued patina. As are all the pieces of this suite, it is in excellent condition. The only small flaw is a tiny piece of wood missing from the top corner of the centre cupboard door. The server, as richly carved as the sideboard, is 60" at its widest point and 60" to the top of the carved crown. It is 31" deep, with 2 roomy cupboards in between the carved corner columns. It is in excellent condition, with all of the carved detailing intact. The impressive china cabinet has a commanding height of 74" to the very top of the intricately carved gallery. The base of the china cabinet is 47" wide and 23" deep. There is one 9" deep drawer in the base. The glassed in cabinet is 39" wide, with three 12 1/2" deep shelves inside. The base of the cabinet ends in carved "Northwind" faced feet front and back.[as do the sideboard and server] The china cabinet has the original finish, is in excellent condition, and all of the carved detailing is intact. The skirted table is 61" long and 49" wide without leaves. It is 31 1/2" high to the table top and the intricately carved skirt is 7" deep. Four powerfuly commanding "man in the mountain" figures support the table on each corner. The table has a uniquely designed self contained centre jack knife leaf. When in place, the length of the table increases to 108" [9 feet]. The richly hued walnut top is polished to a gleaming finish. The condition of the table is excellent, the only small flaw is a piece of beaded trim missing from the table skirt. The 8 matching chairs are 46" high, and include 2 armchairs in the set. The armchair seats are 25" wide and 21" deep. The other 6 chairs have 20" wide by 18" deep seats. The front legs end in paw feet and carved faces are on the "knees" of the chair and on the carved top gallery. The chairs are upholstered with a floral tapestry fabric, which is in good condition. The chairs are all in excellent condition, with original finish, and all the carvings intact. To purchase a one of a kind suite such as this is to not only own a very desireable and functional dining room suite, but it is also a solid investment that will increase in value as the years go by. We hope that our photos have captured all of the impressive richness of carvings that this unique suite displays. Please contact us.for any inquiries or additional information.
